Alexandra Bircken

Alexandra Bircken’s individual sculptural language reveals her deep understand of the materials she employs and a highly sensitive approach to both natural and artificial medium. Bircken’s sculptures contain references to fashion and consumer culture and transfer mechanic methods of operating into a pop-cultural context. Following solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum CS, Amsterdam, Gladstone Gallery, New York, and Herald Street, London, Bircken opened her show “Blondie” at Koelnischer Kunstverein in 2010. For this exhibition, the artist developed sculptures and wall art from wood, hair, and wool, using these elements to explore the quintessential point at which a functional item is transformed into an aesthetic object.
