Andrea Pinheiro

Andrea Pinheiro is an artist and curator working in photography, print, mixed media, paint, video and installation. Her large-scale works often incorporate appropriated art objects, compressing expressions of painting, photography, and digital technology into a single frame. Transforming the relationship of her photographic work to reality, Pinheiro engages the viewer, exposing each piece as simultaneously object and image. Large, dripping swathes of paint or chips of crystalline material complicate the distinction between creation and actuality, undermining the fundamental nature of photography. Irreverent, gestural and striking, Pinheiro’s multilayered compositions challenge the practice of seeing.

She has exhibited across Canada and internationally, including Bomb Book at Presentation House Gallery, and Not Photographs, a two-person exhibition with Damien Moppett at Satellite Gallery in Vancouver. She has completed a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts and a curatorial residency at the Helen Pitt Gallery in Vancouver. She is an Assistant Professor at Algoma University and is also the director of 180 Projects, an experimental exhibition space.
