Andrew Schoultz

The work of artist Andrew Schoultz integrates a meticulous stylized process, inspired by both 15th century German map making and the Indian tradition of miniature painting. Themes of destruction and fantasy permeate his highly political work, which pulls reference form historical and environmental climates. Notions of spirituality, power, imperialism and war come into play, particularly in Schoultz’s large-scale installation works. Working in paintings, sculptures, murals and works on paper, his chaotic imagery gives way to a parallel of whimsy and contemporary storytelling. 

Schoultz has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Copenhagen, Philadelphia, Rotterdam, Boston, London, Portland, Detroit and Milan. He has been included in group exhibitions at the Andy Warhol Museum, Philadelphia, Torrance Art Museum, California, Havana Biennial, Cuba, Hyde Park Arts Center, Illinois, Laguna Art Museum, California, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, among others. His work can be seen in the public collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California, Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, California and the Progressive Art Collection, Ohio, in addition to his publicly funded murals in Portland, Maine, Jogjakarta, Indonesia and San Francisco, California.
