About the Work
Anh Duong’s Lesbienne à Madrid is the second in Artspace's series of 2012 commissions with leading contemporary artists. A six-color lithograph on fine art rag paper, this beautiful rendering of a woman’s foot adorned with deep red nail polish and wearing a delicate sandal may evoke memories of celebrations past or the anticipation of fun to come. On a deeper level, by isolating the image against an empty background, Duong opens a dialectic on the meaning and definition of beauty. In the end, the work is a wonderfully intimate example of the artist’s painterly still lifes.
About the Artist
French-born Anh Duong is a painter and sculptor whose intimate self-portraits and still lifes evoke comparison to artists such as Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, and the Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele. Her paintings, particularly the self-portraits, are meant to be read like a visual diary of the artist’s daily life. Often shorn of adornment, they depict the artist in non-idealized situations, sometimes nude, through which the viewer gains an acute appreciation of the fragility and beauty of the subject.
