Anh Duong is best known for her self-portraits in which the artist depicts herself in non-idealized situations, wide-eyed and raw. The relentless self-examination exposes the artist's own emotions and vulnerability. Of portraiture, Duong has said "In my opinion a portrait is more than a mere fixation of the memory. I consider it as a dialectical game with the mirror image, which I analyze and deal with in a pictorial manner. Every work of an artist is a self-portrait. I am just more conscious of that process than most." Overworked by Dreams, the second in a series of 2012 Artspace commissions with leading contemporary artists, is a beautiful, layered work that reflects the artist's inner life. French-born Anh Duong is a painter and sculptor whose intimate self-portraits and still lifes evoke comparison to artists such as Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, and the Austrian Expressionist Egon Schiele. Her paintings, particularly the self-portraits, are meant to be read like a visual diary of the artist's daily life. Often shorn of adornment, they depict the artist in non-idealized situations, sometimes nude, through which the viewer gains an acute appreciation of the fragility and beauty of the subject.
