Anita Schmid

Anita Schmid is a photographer who works to illuminate and question the link between photography and abstraction by using the techniques specifically inherent to the medium itself. She creates unique works by directly manipulating photosensitive paper. Instead of trying to invent something new, she uses an old photographic printing process—cyanotypes, once used for copying architectural drawings—and gives it her own distinctive artistic language. The monochromatic result is abstract and geometric, yet conceptually references the medium itself.

Schmid lives and works in Vienna, Austria. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under the supervison of her professors Matthias Herrmann and Martin Guttman.
