Brian Block

Brian Block's work is centered on language and its relationships to authority and perception. Block lives and works in New York, and recently completed the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2015-16). Block typically begins a project with a period of in depth original research. For example, his current series of paintings, the “Information Paintings” arose from his ongoing collection of 1000+ photographs of museum wall labels.

Block studied English literature prior to completing his MFA at School of Visual Arts where he studied closely with Mel Bochner and Sarah Charlesworth. Recently, he has returned to institution-based education, at Hunter College in 2013-14 and the Whitney ISP in 2015-16. He has exhibited at the Yale University Art Gallery, Stellan Holm Gallery, White Columns, and PARTICIPANT INC, while his video work has been screened internationally, most notably at LES RECONTRES in Paris, IMPAKT in Utrecht and at V22 in London. Block has done residencies at the American Academy in Rome, The Watermill Center, and The Cooper Union.
