About the Work
Brian Bowen Smith creates an optical illusion in Mannequin by layering negatives onto each other to achieve a patchwork effect over a female nude. The streaks, grain, and border in this photo can be atributed to Polaroid film while recalling early black-and-white photographic techniques, and the trompe l'œil of Mannequin's patchwork body and rags make this photograph stylistically timeless.
About the Artist
Brian Bowen Smith was originally discovered by photographer Herb Ritts while performing as a professional inline skater. Four subsequent years as Ritts’s assistant led Smith to photograph for major fashion magazines including W and Marie Claire. As an autonomous artist, Smith has photographed dozens of iconic celebrities including Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera, Julianne Moore, and Dita Von Teese.
Smith’s artistic photography focuses on the interplay between light and shadow on the human body. Like legendary photographer Richard Avedon, Smith crosses high fashion with fine art by discovering new shapes and forms in the human figure.
