    About The Work

This work from Bruce Nauman's Fingers and Holes series is a raunchy lithograph showing two clowns playing a dirty hand game. Nauman's interest in clowns comes from their ambiguous function as both funny and threatening. The messy, dripping style and the blatant sexuality in this print is also darkly humorous and slightly sinister, with a symbolic image of intercourse superimposed over the clowns' hands, an erect penis protruding from the upper right corner, and a message scrawled backward across the top that says, "'hand pumps up + down/penis pumps up + down."
