About the Work
At first glance, FIRE Tone makes no impression stronger than that of walking through a gray, suburban parking lot: it depicts that banal experience in its true, rainy-day colors. Further observation reveals the playful emphasis on the incomplete logo referenced in the title (the letter “s” is missing in the middle), turning an everyday sight into accidental poetry.
About the Artist
John Armleder and Christian Marclay are two experienced artists who share Swiss upbringings and an affinity for the Fluxus movement.
Born in Geneva, John Armleder studied in his hometown’s École des Beaux-Arts and soon after co-founded the Groupe Ecarte, which gained notoriety in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s and helped export work by American artists such as Warhol or Beuys across the Atlantic. An established artist with more than 40 years in the art scene, John Armleder has mounted exhibitions at the most important venues around the world, including solo retrospectives that have demonstrated his desire to stay disassociated from a defining artistic movement.
Christian Marclay was born in California but raised in Switzerland. Schooled in Geneva, Boston, and New York, Marclay has shown a lot of interest in the art of sound, becoming an intrepid avant-gardist in the non-conventional use of instruments and sound-mixing tools; even going so far as to perform with American rock band Sonic Youth. Parallel to his more experimental undertakings, Marclay also became one of 2011’s official art champions when he won the Gold Lion prize at the Venice Biennale for The Clock, a 24-hour-long film consisting of snippets of time-related scenes from movies that, pieced together, allow one to tell the time at any moment.
