About The Work
Mark-making could be considered the earliest and most general definition of art-making, a concept that Chuck Webster has enthusiastically embraced. His chromatic, geometric drawings and prints reflect the both the spontaneity and purpose of his artistic methods. Reoccurring shapes such as a donut-holed octagon and pyramid like polygons lay a foundation for experiments in color washes and the incorporation of text. The dark, fading wash and flaming red of the central geometric figure in The Pilgrim, one of two other etchings he created during his second collaboration with Wingate Studio, give this piece a slightly sinister tone. Directional markings in the background contextualize the movement of the landscape, which further pronounces the stark effect of the central shape.
