After years of working as fashion editors for publications like ELLE and Harper's Bazaar, Stefania Allen and Kate Davidson Hudson decided to channel their passion for accessories into their own venture: Editorialist, an editorial-meets-ecommerce website that launched earlier this year. In this collection, the two entrepreneurs compiled some of their favorite pieces on Artspace and spoke with our own Meredith Blechman about the artists and accessories they are coveting right now.

What kind of art do you collect and what was the first work of art you ever purchased?
Stef: We both love fashion photography and are currently obsessed with Sam Haskins. We both bought our first sets of Haskins last year from his Cowboy Kate series. In terms of paintings, I love oversized monotone canvases with splashes of color. My husband and I also collect contemporary photography, and our collection includes works by artists such as Zhang Huan, Massimo Vitali, John Hall, and Sean Hemmerle.
Kate: In addition to fashion photography and Sam Haskins, I also collect 18th-century antique oil-on-canvas works.
Who are your favorite artists?
Stef: Alex Katz, Matisse, and my brother-in-law, Hugo Tillman.
Kate: Cy Twombly, and photography talents including Patrick Demarchelier, Arthur Elgort, and Sam Haskins.
As entrepreneurs with an eye for luxury products, what are your thoughts on the intersection of art and fashion?
We feel there is a continual cross-pollination of influence and inspiration between the art and fashion worlds. The most apropos example from this season is Raf Simons's latest [fall 2013] collection for Christian Dior. He used several of Andy Warhol’s drawings as a recurring leitmotif throughout the handbag collection and as a graphic element on a selection of the dresses. It presented a tangible instance of the timeworn tendency for art to imitate life, which imitates art. And, from a consumer vantage point, it presented a new way of looking at Warhol and his influence on modern design.
What is the concept behind Editorialist and what inspired you to create the website?
Editorialist is our vision of a new editorial-meets-commerce concept that connects the dots between aspiration and access and offers a new construct for how we consume our fashion media. With the pieces on our pages largely available for purchase as part of Editorialist’s meticulously curated buy, we stand behind the images we conjure and the style cues we impart by buying into the pieces, designers, and collections we put forth in our editorials. It is with this same discerning eye that we bring our readers a range of one-off designer exclusives and a focused selection of the chicest accessories from fashion capitals around the world.
What is your current accessory obsession?
Oversized gold jewelry! We particularly love the new pieces from Chloé’s forthcoming Pre-Fall 2013 collection. They’re finished in yellow gold and have a slightly Deco-modernist feel. They are the type of statement pieces that can complete a look alone: add one and you’re done!
