Whoever claims that establishing a top notch-art collection is solely reserved for those with a hefty bankroll apparently never caught wind of Herb and Dorothy Vogel's story. Over a 45-year period, these New York legends were able to build an important collection of some 4,700 works of avant-garde conceptual and minimal art, all passionately accumulated on a wing and a prayer—and on their humble salaries as a postal worker and a librarian, respectively.
Spurred on by doggedness, devotion, and a winning engagement with art that impressed artists and dealers alike, the diminutive couple was able to acquire small original works and editions from such towering figures as John Chamberlain, Sol LeWitt, Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Richard Artschwager, Lynda Benglis, Richard Tuttle, Donald Judd, and Chuck Close. The bulk of their renowned collection, originally crammed in every nook and cranny of their one-bedroom, rent-controlled apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side, is now housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and spread across galleries in all 50 states.
So, how did they do it? Quite simply by following their gut and, slowly but surely, supporting the artists they liked—within their budgets—with the only proviso being that the works were able to be easily schlepped by the couple back to their apartment. In the spirit of the Vogels, we have assembled a bevy of stunning artworks created by emerging and established artists fit for a modest budget and discerning eye. All are priced at an attainable $100 or under. The Vogels would very much approve—and, since we'll ship the works to your door, you don't have to worry about the stipulation of hauling your newfound treasures back home on your own.
