The Whitney Museum of American Art was founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. Herself an artist, Mrs. Whitney recognized the challenges faced by living artists around the turn of the century in finding an accepting audience in the United States.
She opened a salon-style studio in Greenwich Village showcasing American artists and built a collection that numbered nearly 600 works. The collection was offered to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which declined the gift leading to the opening of the first museum dedicated exclusively to American art and artists in 1931.
Today, the Whitney Museum of American Art, ably led by Adam Weinberg, is best known for mounting large-scale exhibitions as well as its eponymous Biennial. Initiated by Gertrude Whitney in 1932, it is the longest running continuous exhibition series surveying recent trends in American Art.
Our Whitney Collection presents important works in support of this amazing institution by Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Avedon, Nam June Paik and Terence Koh.
