Daniel Shea

Formal in their composure, the photographs of Daniel Shea reflect his parallel practice in sculpture and installation. Often exploring the borderline between urbanization and industry, the chaotic density of the cityscape is depicted in painterly texture and color. Following the real and imagined narratives of the working class, Shea documents and creates with an intelligent calculation. His book project, Blisner, Ill, follows the fate of a small town in the Rust Belt during deindustrialization. Immersing himself in this world, and various others, Shea has developed an intuitive and graphic style.

Daniel Shea published his first monograph, Blisner, Ill. in conjunction with a long-term residency at Columbia College Chicago and a book release at the Museum of Contemporary Photography. He has exhibited at The DePaul Art Museum, The Museo de Arte Acarigua-Araure, Venezuela, MDW Art Fair, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow, Asia Society in Beijing, and Gallery 400, among others. He completed a residency at Light Work in Syracuse, NY.
