Daniel Bodner began painting in the late 1980s with a focus on the human figure and found that it was actually the figure in space that held his interest. For twenty years he explored these ideas while living in Amsterdam when he was a stranger—an outsider looking in, making paintings from an interior dialogue, unplanned and organic in process.
In 2005 he returned to New York City where his focus changed. He was still interested in space but became more aware of how the depiction of light describes or in some cases obliterates space and figures. He turned to urban landscapes in which space and figures appear more realistic but often disturbed or abstracted by light.
