David S. Allee

Photographer David S. Allee began his career as an urban planner, a background that has informed his artistic practice. In his own words, “My interests haven’t changed much since becoming an artist...structures, the built environment, that’s what I’m still drawn to, but in a less tangible and more abstract way.” Drawing inspiration from such varied sources as paintings by Dutch Masters and the television show Homeland, Allee works to create very deliberate and cohesive photographic series that explore ideas of public space and urbanism. His finished projects are the result of very careful development and planning.

Allee is a recipient of the Ruttenberg Prize from the School of Visual Arts. He has had solo exhibitions at Princeton University, New York’s Center for Architecture, and the Knoxville Museum of Art, and has been included in group exhibitions, at institutions such as MoMA, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
