Eko Nugroho

A self-made artist who put himself through art school by selling rice and peddling souvenirs in the street, Eko Nugroho is inspired by the environment in which he resides. His works are rooted in the everyday, appealing to his native Indonesia's younger audience and featuring both humorous and disturbing social satires.

Though his work is frequently comic-inspired, Nugroho doesn't limit himself to pen and ink. He creates within a diverse media, including: murals, paintings, animation, video projection, comics, and large scale embroideries. He thinks of his practice as "an ongoing storytelling journey through different medium with different audience at different sites."

Nugroho has participated in several artist-in-residencies to produce site-specific works and has been widely shown in international exhibitions, including the Busan Biennale (2008), Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans (2008), Heden, Den Haag (2008), or KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki (2007).
