Elizabeth Magill

Elizabeth Magill has developed a novel technique for her oil paintings, often starting off with a photographic image on the canvas, which she proceeds to work on, applying and scraping away layers of paint, until she achieves the mood in the painting which she is seeking. The landscapes–often bare, desolate, and even forbidding–are less about representing real views as about reflecting her emotional response to the experience of the encounter. Besides her editions of coloured lithographs, she has also at times produced series of monotypes–one notable series reflecting a visit undertaken to work in Venice.

She has had solo exhibitions at the Southampton Art Gallery, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery in Dublin, Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, Milton Keynes Art Gallery, Baltic in Gateshead, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea, and Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, Holsoboro Kunstmuseum, Salzburg Kunstverein, Hayward Gallery in London, and Serpentine Gallery in London.
