Erica Baum

Through photography and appropriation, Erica Baum challenges notions of authorship, reading, and memory. By photographing books slightly ajar, Baum captures multiple pages all in one frame so as to show several slices of reference and narrative at once. These photographs of interrupted stories and images play with larger concepts of place and time while exposing the fine line between visual and linguistic constructions.

Recent solo shows have been held at Melas Papadapoulos, Athens, Greece (2013); Marc Jancou, Geneva, Switzerland (2012); Bureau, New York (2012); and Circuit, Lausanne, Switzerland (2012). Baum has also had solo shows at D’Amelio Terras, New York (2004) and the Clementine Gallery, New York (1997), among others. She has been included in group shows at venues including Capitan Petzel in Berlin, Germany (2013); Galerie Nordenhake in Stockholm, Sweden (2013); the James Cohan Gallery in Shanghai, China (2013); as well as the 30th São Paulo Biennial, Brazil (2012). Erica Baum is represented by Bureau in New York.
