About The Work
This photo lithograph from renowned German painter Gerhard Richter is a collaboration with long-time friend Sigmar Polke. Umwandlung (Metamorphosis) features five photographs that depict a massif—a compact mass of mountainous formation. Capturing this geological occurrence in various stages of manipulated light, not to mention the light itself, the artists present this “metamorphosis” in a simple layout, the text at the bottom reading “5 phases of a transformation made by Polke and Richter. The massif was transformed on 26 April 68 for the duration of two hours in a ball,” and below in smaller type “Edition 16 René Block Gallery 1968th.”
