Hrafnhildur Arnardottir aka Shoplifter Bio

About The Artist

Hrafnhildur Arnardottir (aka Shoplifter) is an artist, designer, and performer known for her sculptures and installations made from braided hair. After moving to New York, Arnardottir adopted the moniker Shoplifter, a common mispronunciations of her Icelandic first name. Fittingly, Arnardottir's work stands at the intersection of art, fashion, and personal style. From rave-worthy neon wigs to baroque tapestries, Arnardottir uses hair as the ultimate medium of self-expression and creativity. "It's been fascinating to me to be able to create an artwork from this material that is already attached to a person, " she says. "I find it simultaneously comical, romantic, silly, and beautiful." Arnardottir has collaborated with avant-pop impresario Björk, fashion designers ThreeAsFour, and nomadic art collective Assume Vivid Astro Focus. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States, including the Clocktower Gallery in New York, Trolley Gallery in London, and Icelandic Museum of Design and Applied Arts.
