Components: Left Resonance, 2012 - Jennie C. Jones

About the Work

About Components: Left Resonance

This is one of the three "speaker cabinet" silkscreen prints, which, along with the three "reverberation" bass string prints, make up the Components suite. Jones uses audio equipment as the model for these works, which draw on the formal language of modernist abstraction.

Jennie C. Jones's practice incorporates aspects of various disciplines, taking the form of prints, drawings, sculptures, and sound-based artworks. An African American woman, she is particularly interested in considering the connections between art and music, often using her work as a vehicle to confront the absence of African American artists and avant-garde jazz musicians from the history of modernism. In works such as the Acoustic Paintings (2011), which use soundproofing materials to create abstract, monochromatic compositions, Jones merges the formal tropes of modernism with references to the production of experimental music. As Jones explains, "Presence, absence and intention are huge aspects of my work and reflect my interest in history. There is a poetic nature to minimalism that is about striking a balance between full and empty."

Jones was awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and a Creative Capital Grant. Select exhibitions include The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington DC; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX; The Menil Collection, Houston, TX; Sikkema, Jenkins & Co, New York, NY; The Kitchen, New York, NY; and The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY.Read Less
