Jockum Nordström's collage technique adapted easily to the etching process for a 2008 print project at Crown Point Press. When asked how his life makes its way into his work, Nordström replied: "If you stand for something, then you have to free yourself many times, maybe all the time. Free yourself from your prototypes, from yourself, from your parents, from fear and tiredness."
This work is a classic example of Nordström's best-known pieces. It pulses with the energy of characters that aimlessly wander around a world whose depth is created by masterful layering of collaged elements.Read Less

Jockum Nordström is the modern day equivalent of the best Northern Renaissance painters, only his work is a bit more provocative. An artistic omnivore, he makes furniture, designs carpets, illustrates children's books (including the popular Swedish series Sailor and Pekka), designs album covers, constructs architectural models, and makes animated films. When he discovered he was allergic to oil paints, he adopted watercolor, gouache, graphite, and scissors as his primary tools to create vivid collages. Heavily informed by folk art, human sexual habits, textiles, and maritime lore, Nordström's works look like the modern day equivalents of Colonial quilts. The creator of a number of animated films, Nordström's work has been widely reviewed in global publications, including The New York Times.Read Less
