Joel-Peter Witkin Bio
About The Artist
Since the late 1970s, Joel-Peter Witkin has been making elaborately staged, wickedly surrealist photographs. Hermaphrodites, dwarves, people with deformities, and even corpses appear with props and fetishistic accessories, in outré tableaux that, in recent years, have influenced the fashion designs of Alexander McQueen. Witkin has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad; in 1995, the Guggenheim in New York gave him a retrospective.
