    About The Work

In 1960, John Jonas Gruen, then a young art and music critic for the New York Herald Tribune and his wife, painter Jane Wilson, bought a carriage house in Water Mill in the Hamptons. There they were part of an artistic social milieu that included Willem DeKooning, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollack, Frank O'Hara, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg, among many others. Throughout the '60s, Gruen took endless photographs of these talented men and women and their families, capturing in black-and-white portraits the spirit of a generation.

In his book Young in the Hamptons, a compilation of these photographs, Gruen says, "If there is a '60s body language, it may be reflected in a certain nonchalance that most of us affected—a kind of je m'en fou quality that might even today be characterized as 'very Hamptons.' Whatever it was, the photographs look back on a period of relative well-being, a time of great creative ferment in all the arts."
