In 1960, John Jonas Gruen, then a young art and music critic for the New York Herald Tribune and his wife, painter Jane Wilson, bought a carriage house in Water Mill in the Hamptons. There they were part of an artistic social milieu that included Willem DeKooning, Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollack, Frank O'Hara, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg, among many others. Throughout the '60s, Gruen took endless photographs of these talented men and women and their families, capturing in black-and-white portraits the spirit of a generation.
In his book Young in the Hamptons, a compilation of these photographs, Gruen says, "If there is a '60s body language, it may be reflected in a certain nonchalance that most of us affected—a kind of je m'en fou quality that might even today be characterized as 'very Hamptons.' Whatever it was, the photographs look back on a period of relative well-being, a time of great creative ferment in all the arts."Read Less

John Jonas Gruen wrote about culture for the New York Herald Tribune, New York Magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, ARTnews, Architectural Digest, and Dance Magazine. His photographs are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton. The Whitney Museum owns hundreds of Gruen photographs and held a 2010 exhibition of his work entitled Facing the Artist: Portraits by John Jonas Gruen, which was organized by Elisabeth Sussman, the museum's Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography. His photographs of the World Trade Center tragedy were exhibited at the Middlebury College Museum of Art (2011). Additionally, he has had solo (and two-person) exhibitions Guild Hall in East Hampton (1999), the Hammond Museum in North Salem (2000), the Southampton Historical Museum in Southampton (2004), and the Hecksher Museum of Art in Huntington (2000). His works are in many prominent public collections.
With camera and pen in hand, Gruen documented the scene in newsprint and his books including, The New Bohemia (1966), The Party's Over Now (1972), The Artist Observed (1991), and his memoir, Callas Kissed Me. . . Lenny Too! (2008).
