When the USSR dissolved, in 1991, its satellite states were sent into free space-and uncertain futures. For decades, these outlying republics had been held in orbit by the immense gravity of Moscow. Untitled is one image from Jonas Bendiksen's seven-year photographic journey through these unrecognized countries, enclaves, and isolated communities. It appears in Satellites: Photographs from the Fringes of the Former Soviet Union (Aperture, 2006).
