About The Work

A map of the United States has been cut from leather and is, as the title describes, pinned solely to the wall at the location of Los Angeles. As a result, the southern border is vertically aligned, and, as the leather hangs limply, folds distort the Canadian-American border. Jonathan Monk’s unusual rendering and placement of the U.S. map—both in material and orientation—challenges the viewer to contemplate issues of both physical and political geography.
