Joshua Abelow

Joshua Abelow’s work is characterized by an almost hermetic geometry, a balance between the familiar and the esoteric, and a strong commitment to the absurd. In the artist's own words, "My work is a kind of abstract, autobiographical storytelling. I use text, figuration, and geometric abstraction to piece together different narratives that are interconnected. Many of the themes in my visual work are also found in my writing, as I am interested in the relationship between text and image." Abelow also maintains a notable blog, ART BLOG ART BLOG, which he describes as a kind of "visual radio show." Last summer Abelow published Painter's Journal, a memoir documenting his first year in New York (1999) while working as an assistant to the painter Ross Bleckner.

Abelow’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions at venues including Brand New Gallery, Milan (2012); Sorry We’re Closed, Brussels (2012); Tomorrow Gallery, Toronto (2011); and James Fuentes, New York (2011). A large installation of his paintings is included in the exhibition “Downtown: A view of the Lower East Side” at James Cohan Gallery, Shanghai.
