Joyce Pensato

Joyce Pensato couples the plasticity of paintings and drawings with that of cartoon zaniness. Her work captures the slippery characters of familiar cartoons in erased, smudged, and dripping gestures. Her cast of anthropomorphic ‘toons are pushed toward abstraction by her feverish use of primarily black and white colors, and her riffs on shapes that create a dark and energetic expressionism.

Pensato is represented by the Petzel Gallery in New York. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
