This photographic still life depicts Kelly Poe's recreation of the incendiary device environmental activist Coronado used in his attempt to destroy research for the fur industry. It shows a small sculpture made of porcelain, poised for ignition. The arrangement of three White Cloud Matillaja Poppies that it contains is a reference to the local environment and the identity of Coronado.
Poe's image and object refer to the potential and the potency of Coronado's political action; as the ashes accumulate on the right hand side of the frame, the viewers are made participants in this anachronistic activism.Read Less

Environmentalist Kelly Poe breathes new life (and political significance) into the potentially stale genre of landscape photography. As part of her latest body of work, For the Wild, Poe corresponded with incarcerated environmental activists, asking them to describe the locations that keep them sound despite a life in prison. She then traveled to each location to capture a reality each activist could only enjoy through memory.
Poe has exhibited her photographs around the world, in New York, Ghent, Athens, Guadalajara, and Los Angeles. Writing on Poe's work has appeared in the New York Times, the L.A. Times, and Contemporary. Read Less
