Kenneth Tam

Kenneth Tam’s videos and sculptures explore the dynamics of human relationships. Many of his videos feature the artist’s interactions with strangers he has met online through Craigslist or social media. Tam sets up scenarios fraught with awkward tension, such as taping himself to a middle-aged woman or shutting a man in a cardboard box with arm holes that allow the participant to fondle Tam’s body. The ensuing power negotiations and intimate acts are equal parts genuine and performed. “The things we do feel private, even though we both know the camera is there,” says the artist.

He has had solo exhibitions in Los Angeles at Weingart Gallery at Occidental College, Night Gallery, Pauline, and Roski Gallery at University of Southern California. His work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions in Los Angeles such as The Hammer Museum, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, and Claremont University Gallery. He is a recipient of an Art Matters Foundation grant.
