Kristin Oppenheim

Kristin Oppenheim creates hybrid, almost minimalist installations of sound, photography, and painting that dramatize personal experience and memory. Almost like movie scores, her auditory tracks densely layer sound and special effects—such as spoken text, thunderclaps, and raindrops—to both construct and muddle a sense of narrative thrust. Paired with her delicate paintings and photographs, she creates evocative theatrical tableaux, that in the words of critic Jonathan Griffin: "Offers up more in the way of interference with these forms than a satisfyingly unwinding chain of meaning. However, what is most perplexing about the work is that in its spare specificity it constantly suggests connections waiting to be made and riddles to be solved. Questions queue up to be answered."
