Laura Lancaster

The paintings of British artist Laura Lancaster are shifting and transformative, consciously exploring and distorting the physical image. Collecting and sourcing flea market snapshots, abandoned negatives and anonymous home movies, Lancaster removes any context or recognition from these personal images, transferring the memories onto canvas with sweeping stokes. At times eerie and unnerving, her work exudes a ghostly quality, elevated by the timeless quality of her subject matter. Delving into the tension between sumptuous and surreal, and following in the footsteps of Willem de Kooning and Francisco de Goya, Lancaster imbues her work with psychological energy that goes beyond the canvas surface.

Lancaster has shown her work in a number of solo exhbtions including Workplace London, UK, New Art Gallery, Walsall, UK, Sargent's Daughters, New York, NY, Wooson Gallery, South Korea, DLI Museum, Durham, UK, Bailiffgate Museum, Northumberland, UK. Her pieces have also been included in group shows at Art Los Angeles Contemporary 2016, Los Angeles, Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art, Japan, Itami City Museum of Art (Hyogo/Osaka), Japan, Laing Art Gallery & Museum, Newcastle, UK, Workplace Gallery at the Manchester Contemporary, UK, and Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland, among others.
