A 'Volvo' Bar IV, 2010 - Liam Gillick

About the Work

In his multi-museum, mid-career retrospective, “Three Perspectives and a Short Scenario,” Liam Gillick narrated and directed a dramatic play incorporating this work entitled A “Volvo” Bar IV. As part of the “short scenario” section of the retrospective, the artist invited actors to play out the scenes from his prints. This image recalls Western European woodblock prints with thick black lines depicting a group of cobblers creating and examining shoes. In a commentary on community, the artist portrays tradesmen at their finest, creating and selling their craft.

About the Artist

Born in England in 1964, Liam Gillick emphasizes his roots in postwar Europe and his consequent distrust of authority as major influences in his curatorial techniques and artistic practices. Currently working in London and New York, “engaged with the processes of the everyday,” he rejects the use of the term “contemporary art” citing it as historical and redundant.

Working in a variety of different mediums including large-scale installations, inkjet prints, and music, Liam Gillick always has a new trick up his sleeve. In 2009, he was selected to represent Germany in the Venice Biennale, and he has been nominated for numerous prestigious awards including the British Turner Prize. He contributes to magazines like Frieze, Artforum, and October, and currently teaches at Columbia University in New York and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College.
