AGRICULTURE, DENTISTRY, ANARCHY..., 2011 - Liam Gillick

About the Work

In this set of six silkscreen prints, an abstract geometric graphic design is set against different bold, contrasting colors. The figure, outlined in thick, black lines, is filled in with a series of colored rectangles that extend beyond the black boundaries. Above the figure, the artist pairs “Art & Agriculture,” “Art & Anarchy,” “Art & Chemistry,” “Art & Dentistry,” “Art & Fishing,” “Art & Plumbing,” in writing on each respective print.

Famous for his rejection of the term “contemporary art,” Liam Gillick seems to challenge art and authority with satire in this work. By pairing the word “art” with a wide range of vocations, ideas, and ideologies, Gillick expresses the idea that art is infused into all aspects of our society and is not just the province of the elite.

About the Artist

Born in England in 1964, Liam Gillick emphasizes his roots in postwar Europe and his consequent distrust of authority as major influences in his curatorial techniques and artistic practices. Currently working in London and New York, “engaged with the processes of the everyday,” he rejects the use of the term “contemporary art” citing it as historical and redundant.

Working in a variety of different mediums including large-scale installations, inkjet prints, and music, Liam Gillick always has a new trick up his sleeve. In 2009, he was selected to represent Germany in the Venice Biennale, and he has been nominated for numerous prestigious awards including the British Turner Prize. He contributes to magazines like Frieze, Artforum, and October, and currently teaches at Columbia University in New York and the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College.
