Liliana Porter

Working across a diverse range of media, Liliana Porter creates paintings, drawings, photographs, and video art. Often incorporating toys, knickknacks, souvenirs, and other kitsch materials into her work, Porter uses familiar objects for her subjects and scenes from the everyday, creating unexpected and oftentimes absurd new situations and landscapes. Many of Porter's recent works incorporate a cast of characters comprising inanimate objects, most often human figurines, and animal-shaped toys. Variously photographing them, affixing them to a canvas, or using them as a subject for etchings and prints, Porter highlights the dual existence of these objects, evaluating them in terms of their intended function as well as recontextualizing them as components of her own works, imbuing them with a new meaning and identity.

Porter has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogotá, Panama's Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, and the Museo de Arte Moderno in Cali, Colombia.
