    About The Work

In this untitled print (an edition of 53), artist Lorna Simpson juxtaposes two images: one pictures piano pedals, the other a pair of women's shoes. The accompanying text reads, "What should fit here is an oblique story about absence, but I can't remember the short version." Not only do the metal pedals bear striking similarity to the pointed shoes, but together, the photographs, shrouded in darkness, infer a particular narrative—one in which the absent female sits at the piano and plays. Simpson's work often contrasts text with images of obscured women, and in this way, she subtly brings gender and racial identity issues to the forefront of her work.
