About The Work

Topiary: Amputee with Peg Leg evokes a recurring theme in the work of Louise Bourgeois, reflecting the artist's personal experiences—a tribute to her sister Henriette, who was afflicted with a stiff leg, and early memories of amputees from World War I. The “peg leg” or missing leg motif has come to represent these recollections in a number of works. In this etching from 1998, Bourgeois renders a headless, armless figure in simple drawn lines and a smudge of color—the title a reference to topiary shrubbery.

Printmaking was an important part of Bourgeois' practice beginning in the 1940s, when she worked at William Stanley Hayter's intaglio workshop, Atelier 1. From 1994-95, the Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted an exhibition entitled The Prints of Louise Bourgeois.
