Opening Reception for "404 E 14" at Tibor de Nagy Gallery , 724 Fifth Avenue, 12th Floor, 5–7 p.m. (Through August 2nd)
As one of New York City's first artist studio buildings in the 1960s, 404 East 14th Street in the East Village was and is home to some of the 20th-century's most remarkable artists. Organized by Tibor de Nagy artist Tom Burckhardt, a current resident of the building, this exhibition, which opens this Thursday, features works in an array of media from artists like Wes Anderson, Allen Ginsberg, Claes Oldenburg , Fred Wilson , and even Artspace's own Walter Robinson .

Opening Reception for Paul McCarthy's "WS" at the Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue, 1 – 8 p.m. (Through August 4th) $15, $12 Students and Seniors
Co-curated by the Armory's artistic director Alex Poots and " super curator " Hans-Ulrich Obrist, this expansive exhibition—the artist's largest to date and his third of four shows in the city this summer —sets a series of violent and sexual fairy tale imagery amid a replica forest. Definitely not for kids.
"KALEIDOSCOPE" presented by RAW Brooklyn at 74 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn, 8 p.m. – 12 a.m., $20
Don't be fooled by the cocktail attire dress code, this "artistic circus of creativity" should border on amusing mayhem, as curators Emma Marie Riley and Kaitlyn Hamilton have gathered together an array of local musicians, visual and performance artists, and even a hairstylist for this event promoting the work of emerging artists.

Opening Reception for Miya Ando's "Mujo [Impermanence]" at Sundaram Tagore, 547 West 27th Street, 6 – 8 p.m. (Through July 20th)

Opening Reception for "DNA: Strands of Abstraction" at Loretta Howard Gallery, 525–531 West 26th Street, 6 – 8 p.m. (Through August 2nd)
Following the evolution of abstract painting from its stylistic explosion in the 1960s, when movements like Op Art and Color Field originated, through to its present-day permutations, this massive group show reveals how the medium was used to meet the aesthetic needs of the time through works of artists both old ( Richard Anuszkiewicz , Helen Frankenthaler , Franz Kline) and new ( Joshua Abelow , Amy Feldman, and N. Dash).

This mix of work from messily labeled artists promises to be a interesting exhibition, as they all create unusual art in unexpected formats, such as doormats, balloons, or vitrines of bacteria.

Opening of Aten Reign by James Turrell at the Guggenheim , 1071 Fifth Avenue, 10 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. (Through September 25th)
This hotly anticipated exhibition promises to be one of the year's biggest art events, as the renowned artist transforms the museum's rotunda into a massive artificial and natural light installation.
"Crickets" by Mungo Thomson on the High Line at Little West 12th Street, 7:00, 7:45, and 8:30 p.m.
Gather under the Standard Hotel on this weekend's summer solstice to hear an outdoor revival of the artist's field recordings of ambient sounds from forests around the world, while a live orchestra will mimic the chirping of crickets.
