About The Work
A maverick of punk photography and performance narrative, Mark Morrisroe was one of the leaders in a movement of underground artists, including Nan Goldin and one-time boyfriend Jack Pierson, that produced highly emotive, documentary work in the 1980s. Gender-bending youths, street hustlers and junkie avant-gardists populate Morrisroe’s gritty and heartfelt images. In this photogravure, Untitled (Still Life with Chanel Bag), a designer shopping bag is captured in a sunless room, framed between a large fan and lamp. The chemical splashes call attention to the disconnection between an upper-class symbol and its chaotic environment.
