Martin Usborne
Martin Usborne is a photographer based in London. From a young age, Usborne experienced a deep emotional affinity with animals of all kind, a fact that is evident in his surprisingly affective portraits of dogs. This series is similar to the work of other well-known photographers whose primary subjects are animals, like, for example, William Wegman, in that Usborne’s photos are humorous but also exhibit the same heft and weight as portraits of human subjects. Usborne’s photographs don’t just tell us what we already know about dogs; they also, by extension, and in the range of emotions and psyches on display in the photos, tell us about ourselves. Ubsorne is also a committed animal activist; in 2013 he ran the project “A Year to Help,” wherein the artist dedicated a year to saving as many animals as he possibly could, from slugs in his garden to abandoned dogs in Greece.
Martin Ubsorne studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Edinburgh University. He has had solo exhibitions at the Hackney Museum in London and numerous other galleries in England.
