Maximilian Toth

Maximilian Toth creates large-scale canvas and wall pieces, populated by scenes of aggression, passion, gestural movement, and adolescent rebellion. Rendered in Toth’s sketchy, semi-abstract style, his figures act as anonymous vessels for the raw energy of youth, fueled by fear and hormonal dissent. Rendered with a single outline, as if caught in the midst of the action by an out-of-frame narrator, swathes of color often punctuate these scenes. Inspired by real-life experiences growing up in Massachusetts, Toth weaves a narrative of suburban American folklore, from out of control house parties to drunken snowball fights and illegal firework displays. Exploring the inherent destructiveness in these seemingly everyday scenarios, Toth’s paintings aim to address larger issues of cultural violence, shared experience, and the mythology of American youth.

Max Toth has been included in group shows at Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT, Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, Dallas, Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Jack Tilton Gallery, New York, 577 Gallery, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and Fredericks & Freiser Gallery, Basel, Switzerland.
