Michael Mapes

Michael Mapes was educated as a graphic designer and later received a Masters degree with an emphasis in studio art. In 1988, he formed the wholesale company MINC, where he created products sold internationally. The curator Brian Hannon writes, “Not only are his works interesting studies in their own right, but they further challenge us to question the ways in which scientific information is assimilated into a culture.  His unique appropriation of traditional ideas on portraiture and entomology, taxonomy and forensic science convey the inherent tension between a methodical objectivity and an unavoidable psychological subjectivity.”

Mapes has shown his work in several exhibitions including Yellowstone Art Museum, Billings, MT, Beers Contemporary, London, and Opera Gallery, Hong Kong. In addition to numerous individual commissions, Mapes’ recent corporate commissions include multiple works for the newest ships of Holland America and Royal Caribbean cruise lines and The New York Times.
