Raised in London, Gavin Brown moved to New York in 1988, working at a series of galleries before opening Gavin Brown's Enterprise on Broome Street in SoHo. He earned attention early for showing portraitist Elizabeth Peyton, and he continued to introduce new talent to the art scene. His current roster includes Franz Ackermann, Martin Creed, Peter Doig, Rob Pruitt, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Tony Just. His gallery also helped boost the career of electroclash, performance art band Fischerspooner. In 1997 the gallery moved to West 15th Street, and in 2004 it moved to its current location on Greenwich Street.
