Pavel Wolberg

Though Pavel Wolberg has spent most of his life in Israel, he still manages to imbue his photographs with the distant eye of an outsider. Drawing on his background as a photojournalist, Wolberg creates unsentimental documents of contemporary Israeli life, treating the conflicts and political instability as a part of everyday life. He effortlessly navigates the border between news and art, creating sweeping, complex images from quotidian activity. The inherent tension that underscores his images of firing tanks or IDF rifles remain free from the sense of dread and horror more typically associated with such subjects.

Wolberg’s work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions across Israel and abroad, including in solo shows at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Herzeliya Museum of Art and group exhibitions at the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Jewish Museum in New York, the Haifa Museum of Art, and New York’s Exit Art. He was included in the 2007 Venice Biennale exhibition Think With The Senses, Feel With the Mind, curated by Robert Storr.
