Untitled (Sculpture Silhouette Model) is a maquette of thirteen sculptures, adapted from Peter Coffin's original public art installation and displayed on a pedestal or table-top. The work is an intimate journey through the history of sculpture in space and time, evoking new associations with the great art of the past.
For his 2009—2010 Public Art Fund installation, Peter Coffin populated City Hall Park in New York City with the same thirteen monumental silhouettes of iconic sculptures based on works by Auguste Rodin, Lygia Clark, Pablo Picasso, Louise Bourgeois, Nam Jun Paik and Sol LeWitt among others. Towering at eight to ten feet tall but only an inch thick, Coffin's sculptures created an illusion of space and forced the viewer to reexamine famous sculptures in an unexpected context.Read Less

Interested in the way people perceive and interpret, Peter Coffin's conceptual interdisciplinary practice plays with both the limitations and possibilities of our perception. Drawing on art history, science, psychology, and epistemology, Coffin creates multimedia works that reassemble the world around us in a way that makes us question our preconceptions and gain new perspective.
Some of Coffin's projects include constructing a UFO that was flown over the Baltic Sea and the coast of Brazil, assembling an elaborate industrial conveyor that carries balloons through a gallery space, and inviting musicians to serenade plants in a greenhouse. Coffin's interest in the idea of a "collective unconscious," that we all share a past and some basic perceptions, informs his reinventions of reality.
