Phoebe Unwin

Phoebe Unwin graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where she lives and works. Unwin’s paintings, worked out in drawing books before they are transferred to canvas, shift between figuration and abstraction. Recurring motifs include sunglasses, modernist geometrical forms, and portraiture. Her work moves between explosive abstract motifs and a dark psychological space. Turn to Pastel (2008) shows a woman painting, her arm a nearly abstract bright pink “L” and her black hair rendered as a series of rough short brushstrokes.
