Bathtime With Clara and The Domesticated Alligator, 2010 - Rebecca Graham

About the Work

Rebecca Graham's eerie photographs are infused with what she calls an air of "elegant corruption." She says, “My work is dedicated to those who are dependent on beauty in order to survive in modern society. Infused with influences from literature, decadent black humor and childhood mythologies, every image begins as a roughly drawn sketch. My background in painting, sculpture and set and costume design all come into play in this process of creating theatrical compositions that give evidence to a parallel life thinly, but decidedly walled against modern-day banalities.”

About the Artist

Rebecca Graham's work affords the viewer a glimpse inside her slightly twisted mind, which reflects a Goth fantasy world. Utilizing her background in theater and set design, Graham creates living compositions that she then captures on film. Having grown up in the moss-laden depths of the South, her work is inextricably linked to the alternating light and gloom of the landscapes of her childhood.

Her photographs begin as detailed drawings that she then brings to life by transforming herself and her friends into the characters she imagines. The resulting compositions are both sweet and hauntingly ethereal. Exiled from her hometown of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Graham continues to develop her style in her adopted city, Minneapolis.
